Costa Coffee began life in 1971 as a small London roastery run by brothers Bruno and Sergio Costa, and grew through Whitbread's ownership from 1995 into a national chain before The Coca-Cola Company bought it outright for 4.9 billion US dollars in 2019. Today it remains the UK's largest dedicated coffee-shop network.
It doesn't have the UK coffee market to itself, though β competition from other major chains has grown closer in recent years.
